The founder of New Beginnings for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Mark Overton, has 20+ years' experience in the residential construction and renovation industry.  He has been a project manager for the largest home builder in the US,  both in Houston, Texas and Chicago, IL and a construction manager for the largest remodeler in Chicago.  He also has a decade of experience in financial management.

Mark began to experience vision loss in 2017 and by 2018 he became legally blind. In 2019 he began training to learn the skills he needed to function with vision loss. During his training he met many other blind and visually impaired individuals. As he and his classmates shared their life experiences, he heard a recurrent theme. Many of his classmates were not happy with their living situation. They desired the opportunity to live independently among other blind and visually impaired individuals. They were not able to do so due to many factors, such as affordability and the nonexistence of such a community.  The experiences of his classmates and their frustrations, his own frustrations and his professional experience inspired him to create New Beginnings for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

The co-founder of New Beginnings is Ana Rubio.  She is a Registered Nurse with over 20 years’ experience in patient care, research, case management and leadership in Chicagoland healthcare organizations. She is currently a Clinical Operations Manager at a major Chicagoland hospital.  She witnessed the impact of vision loss on her husband, Mark, and the barriers to accessing needed services he encountered along the way.  This experience inspired her to co-found New Beginnings.
